Chapter 17

Rei ran to the parking lot. She wanted to make sure Trey didn’t forget about their date. Normally, she wouldn’t think that about him every moment, but he’d started being less present in their conversations. Without warning, he’d stopped calling her altogether.

He was walking toward his car. His head was down with a frown marring his usually welcoming face.

Rei picked up speed and ran up behind him. “Hi!” Rei wrapped her arms around his back and stomach.

Trey stopped and pivoted to give her a hesitant hug in return. “I was going to text you and cancel. I have to leave early to set up some things for Jake.”

Rei smiled up at him, even though she wanted to frown about him trying to ditch her. “I’m here now, so we can go.”

He sighed. “Okay.” Trey opened the door for her, then searched around the parking lot.

Rei waited until he got into the car. Then she put on her seatbelt. “Practice was good today?”

“You can say that.” He put on his seatbelt. Trey started the ignition and pressed the gas. He was quiet as he drove out of the parking lot.

“I had a good practice. Maribelle and Pippa keep telling me I’m the best flyer they’ve ever had. I think they like me because I’m light enough for them to toss me around like a football.”

Trey chuckled. “I can see that.”

Rei elbowed him. “Watch it, I’m taller than I look.”

“If you say so.” He cleared his throat. “You didn’t tell me your brother was Dex.”

Rei pursed her lips. “Why did I need to? There are so many things we have fun talking about besides family stuff.”

“Hmm. He never mentioned you either.” Trey frowned. “Why?”

“Well, it started when we were younger. My parents being on the professional fighting scene made us want to separate ourselves from their careers. You know, stay away from their drama since none of us wanted to be fighters like them or own a gym like them.”

“You don’t look like Dex at all.”

“I don’t look like any of my siblings, not even my twin. They say when my hair is straight, I resemble my mother’s grandmother that was an Occaneechi Indian.”

“Look, I hate to do this, but I can take you home or to your family’s gym on the way to the skatepark.”

Rei touched his arm, slowly releasing the breath she’d been holding when he didn’t jerk away. “Why? I want to be with you, Trey.” Her voice cracked.

“It’s complicated.”

“Isn’t everything worth fighting for?” Rei blinked back tears.

“You don’t understand. I’m getting in too deep, and what I’m doing could hurt you—in more ways than one.”

“I can take care of myself.”

“That so? What happened over at Maribelle’s with Luca and Asher?”

Rei removed her hand from his. “What do you mean? They were over her house. We danced, went swimming in her pool.”

“That’s not what Jake said happened.”

“What?” Rei narrowed her eyes. “I texted you—begged you to come over.”

“So? Because I didn’t, you and Asher snuck away from them and stayed away for thirty minutes.
